Colorado Senior University Audition Instructions
Eligibility: Colorado State Thespians offers this opportunity for senior thespians to audition for over thirty Universities, Colleges and Conservatories from across the nation. Any senior Thespian with a declared theatre major, with at least a 2.75 G.P.A. may apply to audition by completing the application form and returning it along with the $35 audition fee postmarked by November 1st. All students who audition must be registered for the conference and be members of their Thespian troupe.
Audition Requirements: All auditions will be a maximum of two minutes including the time to introduce yourself by name only. All auditions are monologue presentations. Choose one audition category listed at the bottom of the application form. If you exceed the two-minute time limit, the timekeeper will call “time.” The audition space is approximately 12’ by 8’ with general white light. The use of one straight back chair will be available. You may not use additional set pieces or hand props. Costumes are not appropriate.
Audition Form Instructions: Each auditor has a copy of your application form in hand before you audition, so the auditor’s first impression of you is your audition form. Please follow these directions to make your first impression a good one!
Audition Day: Confirmation of your audition time will be posted on the web site www.cothespians.com. Report to the posted waiting area fifteen minutes prior to your scheduled audition session, this is a time to warm up and get into your specific order of performance. You will be escorted to the audition room in one group. You must stay through the entire session, approximately 75 minutes. During the session you will sit in the performance order and have the opportunity to watch everyone in your session perform, before and after you. No one may enter the audition room once an audition session begins. If your name does not appear on the official web site after November 15, your sponsor may contact Mrs. Brittany Wallis at Horizon High School, 720-972-4502.
Callbacks/Interviews: Callbacks for a personal interview with college and university representatives will be posted at the end of each audition session. Be prepared to answer questions about yourself, your goals in theatre, and to ask about the school’s program. You may be asked to repeat all or a portion of your audition. Please have the courtesy to contact all schools that call you back. Scholarships and admission, based on your audition, may be offered to you by mail, phone or Email after the conference is over.
Colorado State Thespian Scholarship: This scholarship will be offered to three students in the amount of $1,000 each. The auditors will select the recipient in attendance on the basis of your audition. The award will be made directly to your college/university on confirmation of your intent and enrollment. The award is presented at the closing of the conference and the recipient and troupe must be in attendance to perform their audition at the closing ceremony.
Audition Category Definitions:
Acting: Perform two contrasting selections from published literature within the two-minute time limit. Choose characters reasonably close to your own age that provides opportunity for physicalization. Make sure you feel comfortable with the selections and make your characters come fully alive in the short time you have.
Musical/Acting – Perform one acting and one musical selection within the two-minute time limit. Accompaniment for musical auditions must be pre-recorded on a cued tape or CD. A player will be provided, however, operation of the player is your responsibility.
Dance – Perform one acting or musical selection and a one-minute dance routine. Follow the applicable rules above, a dance only audition will not be allowed.
Technical – A space will be provided to lay out your portfolio, designs, renderings, plots, books, pictures, etc. which illustrate your expertise in technical theatre. In the form of a one-minute introduction, you should prepare to discuss your previous work, the productions you have worked on and your expectations of future theatre involvement. After all introductions are complete, auditors will spend some time with each of the students displaying their work. Your work will be on display all day for the auditors to review previous to your introduction. All technical auditions will take place at the same time, in the same room. The time limit each auditor has with you is somewhat relaxed and informal.
Sponsors: Please read the instructions and help your auditioning students follow them. Students often return sloppy or penciled application forms. Others are over the time limit. Several each year fail to contact college representatives who call them back. Remember that each student represents you, your school, and Colorado State Thespians. Sponsors will not be allowed to observe auditions, at the request of the auditors and space limitations. Questions or concerns should be addressed to the following:
