MONOLOGUE ACTING RULES

  1. Students can present one two minute monologue or two contrasting selections that may be different in period, style, or mood, but do not exceed two minutes. Please note if you receive a superior rating and would like to continue to Festival, you must follow the Festival time rules which are five minutes for this category.
  2. Material must be drawn from published scripts written for theatre or film. Works from other forms such as poetry, fiction or song lyrics are not permitted.
  3. Only one character from each play may be used.
  4. The introduction must include student's name, troupe number, title of selection(s), and the name of the playwright. Time will begin once the performer speaks after conclusion of the introduction.
  5. Props, costumes or theatrical make-up are not allowed.

 

DUET ACTING RULES

  1. Students must present one selection.
  2. Material must be drawn from published scripts written for theatre or film. Works from other forms such as poetry, fiction or song lyrics are not permitted.
  3. Each participant must be actively involved in the scene.
  4. The selection cannot exceed five minutes.
  5. The introduction must include the students' names, troupe number, title of selection, and the name of the playwright. Time will begin once a performer speaks after the conclusion of the introduction.
  6. Props, costumes or theatrical make-up are not allowed, however, coordinated outfits are acceptable.

 

SOLO MUSICAL THEATRE RULES

  1. Students must present one selection
  2. Material must be drawn from published scripts written for theatre or film. Works from other forms such as poetry, fiction, or standard popular song lyrics are not permitted. The selection may contain dialogue.
  3. Performers may use non-vocal musical accompaniment that is live or recorded, a CD player will be available.
  4. The selection cannot exceed five minutes.
  5. The introduction must include the students' name, troupe number, title of selection, and the names of the composer and lyricist. Time will begin when the music starts after conclusion of introduction.
  6. Props, costumes, or theatrical make-up are not allowed

 

DUET MUSICAL THEATRE RULES

  1. Students must present one selection.
  2. Material must be drawn from published scripts written for theatre or film. Works from other forms such as poetry, fiction, or standard popular song lyrics are not permitted.
  3. Performers may use non-vocal musical accompaniment that is live or recorded, a CD player will be available.

GROUP MUSICAL THEATRE RULES

  1. "Group" means three to sixteen or more performers.
  2. Students must present one selection.
  3. Materials must be drawn from published scripts written for theater or film. Works from other forms such as poetry, fiction, or standard popular song lyrics are not permitted.
  4. Performers may use non-vocal accompaniment that is live or recorded, a CD player will be available.
  5. Each participant must be actively involved in the scene.
  6. The selection cannot exceed five minutes.
  7. The introduction must include the students' troupe number, song title, and the names of the composer and lyricist. Time will begin when the music starts after conclusion of introduction.
  8. Props, costumes, or theatrical make-up are not allowed, however, coordinated outfits are acceptable.

 

PANTOMIME SOLO AND PANTOMIME DUET RULES

  1. Student(s) must present one selection.
  2. No lip synching or audible vocal sounds by the performers are permitted.
  3. Performers may use taped non-vocal accompaniment or taped non-vocal sound effect.
  4. Only solo or duet performances are permitted.
  5. If performance is a duet pantomime, each participant must be actively involved in the scene.
  6. The introduction must include the student's name, troupe number, and title of pantomime piece. Time will begin when a performer moves after conclusion of introduction.
  7. Props, costumes or theatrical make-up are not allowed, however, coordinated outfits are acceptable.

 

SHORT FILM

(Must be postmarked by November 15 and mailed to Colorado Thespian's)

  1. Students must submit a DVD with an original short film that is no longer than 7 minutes in length from opening title screen to final credits.
  2. Films must be of original content and may be collaborations between students.
  3. Music must be original or documented public domain material.
  4. Films must contain content that is appropriate for high school audiences.

COSTUME DESIGN RULES

  1. Presentation must be a publicity campaign for one published play written for the theatre. Designs for performance of poetry, fiction, screenplay, or any other medium are not permitted.
  2. The student must present five character renderings. These may represent five different characters, or follow a single character through several appropriate changes. No more than five renderings are permitted. No finished costumes are permitted.
  3. Each design must be executed in full color on a 10" x 15" white illustration board. All figures must be 10" tall. The base of the figure should be 3" from the lower edge of the board. Template or trace characters may be used as a base.
  4. The board should be labeled in the following manner: (a) Upper left-hand corner: Play title and playwright; (b) Upper right-hand corner: Character's name, act, and scene; (c) Lower right-hand corner: Student's name and troupe number. No other information may be written on the board.
  5. Only one student may be involved in the design. No collaborations are permitted.
  6. The student must make an oral presentation justifying the designs. Note cards may be used. The student must also be prepared to answer questions about the design presented. Questions are not part of the ten minutes allotted time.
  7. The introduction must include the student's name, troupe number, title of play and playwright.
  8. Oral presentation cannot exceed ten minutes. Time will begin once the presenter speaks after conclusion of the introduction.

PUBLICITY DESIGN RULES

  1. Presentation must be a publicity campaign for one published play written for the theatre. Designs for performance of poetry, fiction, screenplay, or any other medium are not permitted.
  2. The following materials are to be presented:
  3. Poster design on 11 x 17 paper, flush mounted on foam core.
  4. Program design and full layout of not less than four pages and not more than eight pages.
  5. Two press releases to include an informational article and feature article
  6. A proposal for a promotional project (no finished products)
  7. Only one student may be involved in the design. No collaborations are permitted.
  8. The student must make an oral presentation justifying the designs. Note cards may be used. The student must also be prepared to answer questions about the design presented. Questions are not part of the ten minutes allotted time.
  9. The introduction must include the student's name, troupe number, title of play and playwright.
  10. Oral presentation cannot exceed ten minutes. Time will begin once the presenter speaks after conclusion of the introduction.

 

SCENIC DESIGN RULES

  1. Presentation must be a publicity campaign for one published play written for the theatre. Designs for performance of poetry, fiction, screenplay, or any other medium are not permitted.
  2. The student must construct an original, three-dimensional model or a perspective rendering executed to the scale of ½" to 1" showing the set and its relationship to the theatrical space. Either model or rendering will be permitted - both will not.
  3. At least one figure must be included in the rendering or model to show proportion and scale.
  4. The student must draw a floor plan to the same scale.
  5. All forms of staging are permitted. The set design must clearly define the performance space and audience configuration.
  6. The student must present a justification of the design. Note cards may be used. The student must also be prepared to answer questions about the design presented. Questions are not part of the ten minute allotted time.
  7. Only one student may be involved in the design. No collaborations are permitted.
  8. The introduction must include the student's name, troupe number, title of play and playwright.
  9. Oral presentation cannot exceed ten minutes. Time will begin once the presenter speaks after conclusion of the introduction.

       EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR SCENIC DESIGN

  • Interpretation: Does the design visually reinforce the mood, style, character, and theme of the play?
  • Execution: Is the model or rendering executed with precision, clarity, and attention to detail?
  • Presentation: Is the designer able to justify the significant elements of the designs, such as color, form, and arrangement of space - in terms of the script?
